What are aphrodisiac foods?

Aphrodisiac foods can be defined as a food that arouses sexual instinct, brings on desire or increases sexual pleasure or performance.

Oysters are one of the most well-known aphrodisiac foods. This dates back to the 18th century when it is believed that Casanova himself ate 50 oysters every day for breakfast. But let’s face it, most of us don’t tend to stock up on oysters during the weekly food shop!

Black Raspberries

Phytochemical-rich black raspberries improve sexual endurance. They’re also high in vitamin C, which is a key nutrient for a healthy male and female libido.


Any variation of broccoli – raw, boiled or sautéed – has been proven to increase the female libido, thanks to high levels of vitamin C. Broccoli also contains Diindolylmethane (DIM) which helps reduce the conversion of testosterone to estrogen, helping to maintain higher testosterone levels. This helps to give the female sex drive a boost!


In India, cloves have been used for centuries to treat male sexual dysfunction. Research published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine has found that clove extract has been linked to an increase in sexual activity in male rats.


Figs are high in zinc and magnesium, two nutrients needed to make testosterone, increasing libido and stimulating fertility. Figs have also been known to enhance sexual pheromones, making the person eating them generally more sexually appealing.


Researchers at Texas A&M Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Centre have reported finding that the lycopene found in watermelon has the same effect on blood vessels as Viagra and has even been found to increase libido in both men and women.


Eggs are high in protein, low in calories and an excellent source of amino acid L-arginine, which can help to treat erectile dysfunction. They also contain high levels of B5 and B6, both of which help to regulate hormone levels.


Ginger is widely used for medicinal purposes, mostly to treat colds and indigestion. However, it’s also known to boost your libido! Ginger helps to increase blood flow to the sexual organs.


One of the biggest reasons for a decrease in sex drive is stress and lemons are known to be a natural stress-reliever. Lemons are also high in vitamins C so adding lemons to your diet can reduce stress, boost your energy and increase your sex drive.


Bananas are one of the best sources of potassium, counteracting the effects of high sodium foods. Food high in sodium reduces blood supply to the genitals, making it difficult to reach orgasm. Bananas also contain bromelain, which helps produce testosterone, increasing both male and female sex drives.


Coffee is considered one of the best female libido boosters around. Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Centre of Houston have also found that two to three cups of coffee a day reduces the chance of erectile dysfunction in men.
