Everything you need to know about the male libido

We're here talking all things relating to the male libido! Did you know changes to your libido could indicate an underlying medical condition? Your libido, or sex drive, is defined as your enthusiasm or interest in sexual activity, either alone or with a partner.

What is a normal libido?

How long is a piece of string? Everyone is different - what is “normal” for one person or one couple, might not work for another. Some people might be happy having sex once a month, while others are getting it on every night. Do whatever feels right for you!

What affects your sex drive?

The male libido changes naturally, day to day and even minute to minute, and can be affected by a wide variety of internal and external stimulants:

  • Alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Life circumstances
  • Medication
  • Relationships

A change in sex drive, either increase or decrease, could also be an indicator of an underlying medical condition. Your mental health also has a big impact on all aspects of your life, including your libido. Stress, anxiety and depression can all cause a sudden change in libido. If you have any concerns about your physical or mental health, speak with your GP. Your GP will likely ask you about your lifestyle, diet, medications and relationship, to try to understand what might be affecting your libido. Your GP may also run some tests to check for underlying medical conditions.

Once you're given the all clear, you may want to kick start your libido again. Here are a few tips for boosting your sex drive...

Start with good nutrition

Foods high in zinc help the body produce testosterone, a mineral which is great for getting you in the mood. Zinc is found in beef, lamb, spinach and most nuts and seeds. Zinc also inceases sperm production so can help to increase your fertility. To help increase male libido you need to have a good blood supply to your sexual organs. Foods that help improve blood flow are garlic, ginger and chilli.

Get your heart pumping

Stimulate testosterone and other hormone growth with exercise. Strength and conditioning training using heavy weights and low reps has been proven to increase libido. Push yourself so that you feel the benefits but don’t over do it or you’ll be too tired to get down in the bedroom afterwards!

Spice it up

One of the main causes of a decrease in libido in couples is a lack of spontaneity. Try something new in the bedroom (or outside the bedroom) to get you both in the mood. You can do this in small stages, if you like. For example, if you've never experimented with lube before, why not try some to feel what difference this makes to your lovemaking? OVIO personal lubricant gels are water-soluble and long-lasting. So not only are they gentle against intimate skin, they can keep going just as long as you can!
