What is Douching?

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that vaginal douching can be damaging to our intimate health. In fact, there are many disadvantages of douching which far outweigh any perceived benefits. Here are some of the risks associated with vaginal douching...

Increased risk of bacterial vaginosis (BV)

Douching disrupts the natural pH balance of bacteria in the vagina. These changes make the environment more favourable for the growth of bacteria that cause infection. Studies have found that women who stopped douching were less likely to suffer from bacterial vaginosis flair ups. If that's not an incentive to stop douching, we don't know what is!

Increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, which has a whole host of uncomfortable and distressing symptoms. Research has found that douching can increase the risk of developing PID.

Increased risk of fertility challenges

Women who practice douching regularly have more difficulty getting pregnant than those who don't douche.

How to take care of your vagina

Simply wash your intimate area daily using warm water and mild, unscented soap. Perfumed products can alter the pH balance of the vagina, even when used to wash around the area. Your vagina is self-cleaning and produces its own natural discharge to keep it moist and protected from infection. Healthy vagial discharge has a mild odour - this shouldn't smell offensive. If you notice a strong odour or a change in your vaginal discharge, you may have a vaginal infection such as bacterial vaginosis (BV). This can be treated (and future episodes prevented) with OVIO rebalance. OVIO rebalance helps to restore a healthy vaginal pH, providing relief from uncomfortable symptoms.
